Farmington Copilot

Church Pool October afternoon

You

I’ve got a few hours on the river. How would you approach this spot?

Copilot

I’d aim for the afternoon and check the lower half of Church Pool on the parking-lot side, where the pool widens and the current softens. With crowds high, I’d look for an open seam there before joining the head riffle.

At 55°F and roughly 350 cfs, I’d start with a #18–20 olive nymph. Church’s broad, slower water has a history of surface feeding even when higher flows quiet other pools.

With cloud expected around 3 p.m., watch for small Blue-winged Olives. If olives bring gentle rises, switch to a #22–24 emerger. Keep a #16–18 tan caddis ready for splashier feeding near the head later. Give spawning fish and redds a wide berth.
